Incantation 06/01/2021

Shoot Me

At the piano again. Legs agape,
stadium bouquet a throw away from
the apartment gates.

Wish nothing save oblivion.
Love nothing save the ideal line.
Ride none save levithan.

Idle time lapsed in tide pools,
The wind turns canine when I whistle.
In childhood I traded my heart for a thistle.

Beyond medallions our emblems
emblazoned embody all deities
without comprehension.

  1. I really love this one! It's both simple, yet mysteriously complex (if that makes sense). The 2nd and 4th stanzas caught my attention a lot. I can think about them extensively, but never be entirely sure of the meaning. "Incantation" is a very fitting title, given how those two reflective stanzas are perfectly placed as a break in thoughts between the 1st and 3rd stanzas.
When I read the 2nd stanza, it makes me think of a need or duty to deny our own desires to protect a greater good. It also gives me "entering into nothingness" vibes because without the ability to wish/love/ride (as in control) something, life can seem pretty bleak.
The 4th stanza makes me think of how the material possessions, things we take pride in, and the work we put in into maintaining appearances, all serve some type of idol that we don't even know we are worshiping.
Overall, I really enjoy your writing. I like poetry that challenges me to think deeply because it preserves the magic and beauty of creative writing.
